Celebration is in order for the WSOP's newest Champion - Joseph Mattingly

Elizabeth, Ind. (Oct. 2, 2015) -- Joseph Mattingly has come from behind in Event #1 to beat James Hill heads-up and earn his first career WSOP Circuit gold ring. Mattingly, who remained near the middle of the counts for most of the final table, stayed patient and was able to fully capitalize as soon as good cards starting coming his way.

Mattingly started out heads-up play against Hill as a 2:1 dog in chips. After nearly a whole level of grinding away with no real changes in the stack, Mattingly was able to completely reverse roles when he doubled up through Hill by slow playing quads. Mattingly hit quads on the turn and checked to Hill who checked behind. The river brought a full house for Hill and Mattingly was able to double up after a bet, a raise by Hill and then a three-bet all-in by Mattingly, which was called by Hill after quite a bit of verbal deliberation.

Mattingly perfectly used his momentum and his opponent's frustration to win the tournament just a few hands later. Mattingly flopped a king high flush and induced Hill to move all-in on the turn drawing dead. The gold ring and the money was Mattingly's as soon as the meaningless river card hit.

"[Hill] is super tough. He will never give anything away. He will not put a coin in the pot if he does not have a draw or the best hand," said Mattingly about his heads-up opponent.

The 59-year-old Mattingly is a grain farmer from Springfield, Kentucky. He now has 11 WSOP related cashes to his name. His most recent WSOP cash prior to today's victory came at this year's Seniors event in Las Vegas. Mattingly finished in 47th place out of the massive 4,193 player field to earn $9,773 - his largest WSOP score up until today.

"Well bad luck, but it was great. I love going to Vegas and playing the Seniors event every year." said Mattingly on his deep run at this year's Seniors event.

Mattingly was ecstatic about earning some WSOP hardware, but said that it was now time to go after a gold bracelet to pair with his newly acquired gold ring.

Event #1 was the first of 12 gold ring events on the WSOP Circuit schedule at Horseshoe S. Indiana. The $365 No-Limit Hold’em tournament attracted 167 players generating a $50,100 prize pool. The top 18 players were paid.

Day 1 began Thursday at noon and lasted until the final table was reached, which was shortly into Level 19 around 12:15 a.m. Friday. Day 2 began Friday at 2 p.m. with nine players remaining. The tournament concluded at about 5:45 p.m. near the end of Level 23.

With the elimination of Mink Meixell in third place, James Hill (pictured) and Joseph Mattingly have found themselves heads-up for the title. Both men are sporting Kentucky Wildcat gear and have their sights set on winning their first WSOP Circuit gold ring. This is Hill's first ever WSOP cash while Mattingly adds an 11th WSOP cash to his resume.

As it stands, Hill has about a 2:1 chip lead over Mattingly, but both men are still fairly deep. Hill sits with around 1.1 million while Mattingly has just under 600,000 in front of him. The blinds are only 8,000/16,000 with a 2,000 ante.

The first gold ring of the series will be awarded to the winner of Event #1 - $365 No-Limit Hold'em. The final table begins today at 2 p.m. At this point the final nine players are guaranteed to earn at least the ninth place money of $1,205 and 15 Casino Championship points. The first place finisher will take home the top prize of $13,527 and earn 50 Casino Championship points.

Joey Wideman was the final table bubble boy. He is off to a strong start this Circuit season, already recording four cashes and two final tables.

Registration has closed for the first event in the Horseshoe S. Indiana series. The tournament drew a 167 player field to create a $50,100 prize pool. The top spot pays out $13,527. Along with the cash, the winner will receive a WSOP Circuit gold ring and 50 Casino Championship points. The top 18 finishers will earn a payday with 18th place collecting $672. Anyone who does earn a cash will also earn points toward the Casino Championship. The Casino Championship point model can be viewed on WSOP.com.

The tournament clock currently reads that 63 players remain with five minutes remaining in Level 10. Play will end at the conclusion of Level 21 or when a nine-handed final table is reached, whichever comes first. At this pace the is more likely the final table will be reached before the end of Level 21. Players that survive the day are scheduled to return at 2 p.m. tomorrow for the completion of the tournament.
