Robert Cheung cruises through the turbo event to capture his first gold ring.
Elizabeth, Ind. (Oct. 4, 2015) -- One gold ring and one gold bracelet. It's a group few players are part of, but a group every poker player wants to be a part of. That group just added one new member in Robert Cheung. Cheung won his first WSOP Circuit gold ring event Sunday evening at the Horseshoe Southern Indiana casino.
For many players that have won both the ring and the bracelet, the ring has come first, but not in Cheung's case. Cheung won his first WSOP piece of hardware in 2007 when he went on defeat a field of 2,778 players to win $673,628 in a $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em event. It was his first WSOP victory and his first WSOP gold bracelet. Now eight years later he has won his second piece of WSOP hardware and his first ever WSOP Circuit gold ring.
"The game has changed a lot. In 2007 everything was so much easier. Now that everyone knows how to play, the entire final table was really strong," said Cheung comparing his two WSOP victories.
Cheung said that he is not a big fan of turbo events and prefers the slower structures, but is headed to Cincinnati tomorrow and wanted to play a one-day event before leaving. Cheung intends to be back for the series' Main Event in attempt to cash in on another gold ring.
Cheung's path to the gold ring was no easy task. Although the field was small, it was tough. There were several gold ring winners that went deep including Mark Fink (14th place), William Byrnes (13th place), Chase Hernandez (9th place) and Bernard Lee (2nd place).
Cheung's gold ring winning performance Sunday just adds to his already impressive WSOP resume. This marks Cheung's 44th career WSOP related cash and pushes his tournament earnings over the $1.1 million mark. In the past calendar year Cheung has reached four WSOP Circuit final tables. Don't expect Cheung to slow down either. He plans to continue to hit as many Circuit stops as he can. He enjoys the travel, the poker, and most of all the thrill of winning.
"I have always wanted a ring. That is why I travel and play the Circuit events. They are great value. For $365 it is one of the best structures on the tournament circuit," said Cheung.
Cheung is from Vancouver, Canada. He becomes the second Canadian to win a gold ring this season on the Circuit.
