WSOPC Event #13: $1,700 MAIN EVENT

Andrew Telfer Wins First Circuit Ring in the First One-Day of the Choctaw Series

Durant, Oklahoma (January 13, 2017) –  Andrew Telfer has just won his first World Series of Poker Circuit ring after winning the first $365 No-Limit Hold’em One-Day event of the 2016/2017 Choctaw series. Telfer bested a field of 506 entries to win his first WSOP Circuit gold ring and the top prize of $32,636.

Telfer came into the final table fourth in chips, and it was Jared Hemingway that held the massive lead. Hemingway was the only player at the table that had over a million chips, starting with 1,375,000. The next closest player, Kevin Davis, had 635,000, less than half of Hemingway’s stack. Telfer started with 550,000 at 20,000/40,000 blinds and a 5,000 ante. After a series of hands that did not fall in Hemingway’s favor, he was eliminated in 7^th Place ($4,850).

“He just had the worst luck. He didn’t win a single hand when he was called at the final table,” Telfer explained about Hemingway’s early exit.

“When we got down to four handed, I thought that this was really anybody’s game. I think at that point I was the short stack at the table, but I knew that it was just one double up and I was right back in it. I remember thinking to myself, ‘This is possible…this is doable. I can take this down,’” Telfer reminisced.

Telfer felt that his toughest competition was that of Vincent Moscati, ultimately eliminated in 3d place ($14,741).

“I thought Vincent was the favorite for sure. And I’m a fan of him, I really like that guy. I want to stay in touch for sure,” Telfer said about Moscati.

Heads up play was short lived to say the least. After the elimination of Moscati in 3^rd, Telfer and Jones got it all in the very next hand, with Telfer holding    against Jones’   . The flop came     giving Telfer the lead with a pair of nines, and the   turn and   river were safe, eliminating Jones in 2^nd place ($20,179).

Telfer originally came to Choctaw to play the massive Re-Entry event, and after getting eliminated on Day 1 he said that he almost didn’t play this event.

“He (friend, Will Pan) had a room here, so that talked me into staying another night. He loaned me $100 so I could play some cash and I said if I do decent in the cash game I’ll stay with you and then I’ll play with you in this event tomorrow,” Telfer explained.  He ended up making enough money that he was able to buy into the tournament, but almost talked himself out of it after staying up until 4am playing cash, and then not sleeping for more than a few hours afterwards. “But I felt like hey, I am here, I am gonna play. So it was the stars kind of aligned for me.”

“I am feeling really good. This is exciting.  I have been playing for close to 17 years and the best I have done was $10k so this blew that away," Telfer concluded with a smile.

At the conclusion of this event, Jorge Nieto, Wesley Cooper, and Andrew Telfer are now tied with 50 points each in the Casino Champion race. The player who accumulates the most overall points in the twelve gold ring tournaments at Choctaw Casino earns the title of Casino Champion, and receives an automatic entry into the $1 million 2017 WSOP Global Casino Championship (valued at $10,000). The winner of the Choctaw Main Event earns an automatic entry to the Global Casino Championship as well. All players who cash in ring events will receive points that apply to both the Casino Champion race and the season-long race to claim one of the 50 at-large Global Casino Championship bids awarded to the top point earners throughout the season.
