Poker Legend Doyle Brunson Playing for his 11th WSOP Victory at Today’s Final Table

Win would tie him with Phil Hellmuth, Jr. for all-time lead in most gold bracelets won

Las Vegas, NV (July 3, 2007) – The eyes of the poker world will be focused on Doyle Brunson today in his quest for what would be a record-tying 11th WSOP gold bracelet victory.  He is a finalist in Tuesday afternoon’s $10,000 buy-in Pot-Limit Omaha world championship.  Play at the final table will commence at 2 pm PST.  The action will be played upon the ESPN stage inside the Rio in Las Vegas.

Two weeks ago in Event #15 at this year’s World Series of Poker presented by Milwaukee’s Best Light, Phil Hellmuth, Jr. broke away from the trio of poker legends and was the first player ever to reach the 11-win milestone.  Since then, poker fans have been speculating as to which rival might challenge Hellmuth’s record.  Leave it to a 74-year-old poker legend originally from the dusty town of Longworth, Texas.

Two-time world poker champion Doyle Brunson, from Las Vegas, has fittingly been called the “Babe Ruth of poker.”  Incredibly, he remains at the top of the game – despite his advanced age and the huge fields of competitors that have engulfed the poker world in what has been a record-setting year.

Down to the final nine players, Brunson arrives fifth in the chip count with 510,000.  However, he faces a formidable lineup of foes at tomorrow’s final table.  The current chip leader is Tommy Ly with 1.8 million.  Other finalists include -- Robert Mizrachi, Rene Mouritsen, Patrik Antonius, Jonas Flug-Entin, Marco Traniello, Stephen Ladowsky, and Steve Sung.

Coming into this year’s WSOP, Brunson was locked into a three-way tie with Johnny Chan and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.  Which player would get to gold bracelet Number 11 first was one of the major storylines at the start of the World Series.  Hellmuth answered that question in dramatic fashion.  Now, the next chapter in poker history is about to be written.
