Andreas Klatt wins the largest WSOP Europe PLO event ever and earns his first gold bracelet.
ROZVADOV, Czech Republic – (Oct. 25, 2017) – The second event of the 2017 World Series of Poker Europe is in the books. Andreas Klatt took down the record breaking Pot-Limit Omaha event to capture his first career WSOP gold bracelet and the top prize of €56,400. The event was the largest Pot-Limit Omaha event in terms of number of entrants in World Series of Poker Europe history. The tournament drew 523 players, breaking the previous record of 503, which was set two years ago at Spielbank Berlin.
Klatt took down the event despite being a little out of his element. Klatt is not a tournament a player, he considers himself primarily a cash game player and plays mostly No-Limit Hold’em, not Pot-Limit Omaha. This marked Klatt’s 7th career WSOP bracelet event cash and was by far his largest. Prior to this cash, Klatt’s largest WSOP cash was $5,405, which he earned this summer at the WSOP in Las Vegas.
Two Germans and two Greeks remained with four players left. Theodoros Aidonopoulos was eliminated in 4th place followed by Georgios Zisimopoulos in 3rd place, which left the two Germans battling heads up for the Bracelet. In the end, Klatt would end up eliminating Nico Ehlers to earn the bracelet. Ehlers’ consolation prize was €34,860.
“It’s unbelievable,” said Klatt about winning the bracelet. “It’s a dream of every poker player.”
Both Germans had support from the rail during the final table and throughout heads up play. Klatt said that it makes a big difference to have friends and supporters around. He said that they are always trying to help each other get better.
Klatt said he mainly plays for money and not accolades, but said he is happy to win a tournament and a bracelet. Throughout the event, his focus was just to take it one hand at a time.
“I never really looked at how many people are left and how much money do I get,” said Klatt. “I just stayed focused. [I] tried to play every hand perfectly.”
Klatt entered Day 2 11th in chips out of the 31 remaining players. By the time the final table was reached, Klatt had moved up to 3rd in chips. He received an unfavorable table draw though with the two biggest stacks on his direct left. One of those big stacks belonged to Sergio Fernandez. Fernandez has started this series off with a bang, final tabling the first two events of the series. He ended up exiting in 5th place after taking a bad beat from Ehlers. He had Ehlers dominated preflop, but was out flopped and couldn’t catch up on the turn or river. Fernandez finished in 3rd place at Monday’s €1,100 Monster Stack final table. His two final table finishes have earned him a total of €61,914 on the series.
Ehlers took the lead after knocking out Fernandez and Klatt sat in second. Klatt eventually overtook the chip lead from Ehlers after executing a big bluff against Zisimopoulos. Klatt held and Zisimopoulos had in a three-bet pot. The two players checked a flop of . Both players then checked the and saw the river. The river gave Zisimopoulos the bad end of the straight. Zisimopoulos made a small bet into the pot and Klatt raised enough to put him all-in. Zisimopoulos folded after a short tank. The pot and the chip lead were pushed to Klatt. Klatt would not relinquish the chip lead for the remainder of the tournament.
The celebration of Germany’s first bracelet at the 2017 World Series of Poker Europe began shortly after the final river card hit and was headed by Klatt and his rail.
