24-Year-Old Ohio Poker Pro Takes Decisive Lead in Casino Champions Race

WSOP Circuit at Harveys Lake Tahoe Reaches Midway Point


Stateline, Nevada (November 13, 2012) – At the rate Daniel Gilmer is winning gold rings, he's going to be running out of fingers and toes pretty soon.

The 24-year-old poker pro from Ashland, OH just won his second World Series of Poker Circuit title in just four days.  This time, he won the $365 No-Limit Hold'em tourney, which drew 219 entries.  First place paid $15,675.

Gilmer's first victory took place on Saturday in the $365 buy-in Turbo No-Limit Hold'em tournament (Event 2), which attracted $16,426 entrants.  He also cashed in the opening tournament of this series (Event 1).  That's three cashes and two gold ring victories in less than a week's time.  

But Gilmer knows these results are beyond extraordinary.  He's been traveling around the WSOP Circuit and other major events during the past two years.  Gilmer enjoyed some previous success, but nothing to the extent of two major victories as prestigious as a WSOP Circuit title.

“It doesn't seem real right now,” Gilmer said moments after his victory.  “I've been playing tow years and was chasing this, and now to have two rings this week alone, is amazing.  Why did I have to wait this long?”

Gilmer paid compliment to his opponents and even cited catching a few cards at key moments as one of the reasons for his recent success.  But Gilmer is also making some very solid decisions, which is putting him in a position to win.

“I got lucky in some key spots,” Gilmer said.  “I've been running very well here at Lake Tahoe, and you can't teach that.”

When asked what he might be doing differently here at this series as opposed to other venues he's visited by did not achieve success, Gilmer reflected upon his strategy.

“I think I am trusting myself more now,” he said.  “I'll follow my own convictions, to make a play o even to get off a hand when I think I'm neat.  You have to have that to win, and I'm getting to the point where I am trusting myself.  If I think it's the right play, I'll go with it.”

Gilmer's victory is meaningful for several reasons.  First, he has distanced himself way out in the front in the Casino Champion race.  With 102.5 points in the race, and most of his rivals stuck around 50 points, by comparison, it's going to take a near miracle for someone to overtake Gilmer in points.  

With this triumph, Gilmer also becomes one of a handful of players who have won multiple gold rings at a single WSOP Circuit stop.  However, since no player in the nine-season history of the Circuit has ever won three gold rings at one stop, Gilmer is now drawing live on that possibility.  He has five more gold ring events to enter and possibly make history.

“Yeah, winning three ring – that would really be special,” Gilmer stated.  “But I can hardly contemplate that right now.  All I am concentrating on when I'm playing is making good decisions.  The rest will take care of itself.”

This is the second consecutive year that Harveys Lake Tahoe has produced multiple gold ring winners.  Last year, Michael Rosenbach won two titles.

Aside from Gilmer's impressive victory, this tournament had a number of other highlights, including the following:

1. Four-time gold ring winner Alexandru Masek finished in tenth place.
 
2. The final table included four gold ring winners – Danial Gilmer, Clint Baskin, Roger Trotter, and Daniel Aran.
 
3. The runner up was Clint Baskin, who won the WSOP Circuit Main Event Championship at Harveys Lake Tahoe
in 2006.
 
4. Two-time gold bracelet winner and WSOP Circuit devotee Howard “Tahoe” Andrew cashed in this event.
