History and tradition are made by real people. One very important person who left an indelible impact upon the World Series of Poker was Robert Thompson, who sadly passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2009.
Thompson served at WSOP Tournament Director for three years, from 1999 through 2001. Under his stewardship, the WSOP arguably faced some of its most serious challenges, which took place immediately following the departure of Jack Binion as tournament patriarch and just prior to the poker explosion after the WSOP’s acquisition by Harrah’s Entertainment. As Tournament Director, Thompson was an anchor who bridged the gap between the pre- and post-Moneymaker eras. Professionalism, fairness, and a sincere love for the game of poker were Thompson’s trademarks.
In addition to working for the WSOP, Thompson ran many other successful tournaments in Nevada, as well. He was employed by some of Las Vegas’ top cardrooms and was one of the industry’s most respected voices.
Among his survivors is daughter Cathi Wood, who has worked as a WSOP Floor Supervisor in recent years. The entire WSOP family extends its sincere condolences to Cathi, and the entire Thompson family.
